Kensington & Norwood Youth Brass

Kensington & Norwood Brass has a long proud history of supporting the youth band as a feeder for the senior band. As members of the South Australian Band Association this arrangement encompasses the aims & objectives of the Association in promoting and nurturing banding, encouraging growth and prosperity.

The youth brass currently consists of 40 registered players between the ages of 7 and 18. The average age is 13 years.

Bruce Raymond is Musical Director of the K & N Youth Band.

Bruce ensures the Youth brass plays a wide variety of music ranging from traditional to contemporary hits and movie themes. This helps to make learning fun for the players and enjoyable for the audience.

K & N Youth Brass is also fortunate to have the support and experience of Allan Moore on Bass trombone. Allan attends band practice each week with the Youth band to assist in their skills development. He was a founding member of the Youth band which had its origins more than 50 years ago.

K & N Youth Brass has been the State Junior Brass Band Champions for a number of years. The Band was placed 3rd in the Open D Grade at the National Championships held in Adelaide in March 2005 and was placed 2nd in the Open ‘C’ Grade at the SA State Championships held in Tanunda in November 2005.

In 2006, K & N Youth Brass won the highly competitive ‘C’ Grade and Junior Grade sections of the SA State Band Championships.

K & N Youth Brass performs regularly in public to showcase the talent of the players & broaden their experiences. These performances have included Fantasy by the Sea at Semaphore, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, and the Adelaide Convention Centre. Concerts have been held at the City of Burnside Ballroom, Norwood Concert Hall and Flinders St Baptist Church.

K & N Youth Band

As well as the State Band Championships, K & N Youth Brass has competed successfully at Mt Gambier Blue Lake Festival. Other competitions include the Barossa Band Festival & the Willunga Festival. The band also attends band camps from time to time. Players are encouraged to enter solo competitions such as Junior State Solo Championships and Salisbury Slow Melody competition.

K & N Youth Brass meets every Thursday during school terms from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm at the band-room 31 Beulah Rd, Norwood.
