Trombones Principal Trombone - Peter Doherty
Peter Doherty BA (Mus) Grad. Dip Ed (Mus) Peter began playing at the age of eight through the Klemzig Brass Band on horn. Throughout secondary school he moved through trumpet, euphonium and tuba and found his forte on Trombone, where he matriculated and gained outstanding grades for his musical performance.
Throughout the following five years, Peter completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in musical performance and gained a Graduate Diploma in Education. Peter gained considerable performing experience during this time having played with the Australian , State Youth Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, plus a gamut of Concert band, big band and small classical and jazz ensembles.
Peter has always maintained a love of Brass Bands not only playing with the Klemzig/Enfield bands but became involved with the formation of the SA Youth Band, workshops and committees.
Peter has regularly competed in solo competitions and has gained the State Title on eighteen occasions and won seven Champion of Champions, five of those being consecutive wins, and holds two Australian Titles.
Peter currently teaches Brass for the State Education Department's Instrumental Music Service. Trombone - Matthew Madden
Matthew holds an Honours degree in Music Performance from the Elder Conservatorium of Music and is completing a Graduate Diploma in Arts Management at the University of South Australia. Prior to commencing his position as Operations Manager with the Australian String Quartet in April 2004, he held the positions of Orchestra Manager with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (liaising with, among others, Red Symons and maestro Richard Bonynge), Assistant to the Program Manager with ABC Classic FM (during Clive Robertson's Breakfast reign), and Music Program Assistant with the 2004 Adelaide Festival.
Matthew has played trombone in concerts, ballets and opera with the Adelaide, Canberra and Elizabethan Theatre Trust Symphony Orchestras, and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. He plays regularly with the Adelaide Art Orchestra (AdAO), performing in the 2003, 2004 & 2005 Adelaide Cabaret Festivals, on ABC Classic FM's Sunday Live, in the 2004 Adelaide Beatles Festival, on the 2003 Country Arts SA regional tour, performances with Marina Prior, Rob Guest and BSG (ex Little River Band) and most recently in the 2006 Intervarsity Choral Festival finale concert. He has also played in touring musical productions such as Porgy and Bess and South Pacific (with AdAO), plays with Mercury Brass Quintet and is President of the St Helen's Park Kindergarten.
His two boys (6 & 4 at the time of writing this) are preparing themselves to join K &N Youth Brass.
Bass Trombone - Bob Johnson
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Bob began his music career in the Australian Army Band Corps in 1970. On completion of his military service, he was invited to play bass trombone with the Tommy Tycho International Orchestra in Sydney. Bob held this position for six years and in that time was also asked to play bass trombone for the Daly Wilson Big Band's 10th anniversary tour. He remained with the band for a further four years playing bass and tenor trombone. He was also invited to play in the backing orchestras for many overseas artists. From 1982 to 1986, Bob played for the TCN channel 9 Midday show orchestra under the direction of Geoff Harvey. In 1987 David Atkins engaged Bob as musical director for his ever popular dance shows, including the internationally acclaimed 'Hot Shoe Shuffle'.Bob returned to Adelaide in 1989 as part time lecturer in Jazz Studies at Elder Conservatorium.
In 1990, he was appointed director of music for the prestigious 'James Morrison Generations in Jazz Scholarship', a position he held for five years. In that time, he was instrumental in creating one Australia's largest festival events, now involving more than 60 high schools Australia wide.
During this time, Bob was still actively involved in many professional performances and was cordially invited to play trombone for the late Peter Allen, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand. From this, Bob was invited in 1995 to contribute with the creation of a degree in Jazz Studies course at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. This was a three year contract.
In 1999, Bob was selected as musical director for Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Seabourn Cruises. This gave him the opportunity to travel extensively worldwide, playing alongside many great musicians from all over the globe. In 2001, Bob resided in Florida, experiencing performances with latin bands throughout USA and the Caribbean. Bob returned once again to Adelaide in 2003, where he formed the 'Bob Johnson Big Band', which quickly gained popularity locally. Sadly, it is currently one of the only big bands performing fortnightly at a professional level in the country. In 2003, Bob was contracted to arrange, conduct and produce a CD for vocalist Greg Meyer.
Bob is still constantly in demand to perform, write, produce, conduct and give workshops Australia wide.
